JOKE OF THE MONTH

A Blue Jay applied for a receptionist job at AT&T. The interviewer, a bit non plussed, told the Jay the applicant was required to type 80 wpm. The Jay did 100. Not wanting a BIRD for the job she told the Jay dictation was required. The Jay surpassed all other applicants. Finally the interviewer thought she'd get rid of the bird by saying "the applicant has to be bilingual". The Jay replied "Meow"!

Did Clinton crisis boost Corel?

Was it the Bill Clinton connection that gave Corel Corp. shares such a sharp rise over the past month? Many market watchers were puzzled by the Ottawa software company's recent market performance, given that the firm was still trying to recover from six consecutive quarters of red ink and poor sales. But the word from Washington is that government officials involved in the chase to prosecute Mr. Clinton typed their 445-page report on Corels WordPerfect software package. A spokeswoman for Corel says there's no connection between the Clinton affair and the stock price rise. Nevertheless, Corel's stock has more than doubled in less than a month. The stock jumped 54 cents on Monday to $4.05 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

WHAT'S NEW-WIN 98

Here are some reasons why you want Windows 98:

1. It's faster. Hard-disk access, memory and Internet access all have been tweaked for noticeable faster performance.

2. It now has the Great browser and the E-mail program. Both of these are much better than the older versions from Microsoft.

3. It supports new hardware. You've heard the acronyms and buzzwords: USB, DVD, FAT32, Multiple Displays and others. This is great stuff, and Win98 supports it all.

4. Help is now helpful. Win98 help is fast, more thorough links to Microsoft's enormous advanced databases of troubleshooting information.

5. It's great for power users. The tools menu on the Win98 System Information Utility alone has more and better power user than NT will have until version 5.0.

6. It has a better UI than the Mac. The Mac's user interface is famouly clean, elegant and consistent. But Win98's user interface enhancements, which you'll be familiar with if you're using IE 4.0, blow the Mac away.

7. It's more stable. Win98 crashes far less frequently than Win95. Microsoft fixed more than 3,000 Win95 bugs.

8. System maintenance is easier. The Disk Cleanup Wizard, which automatically deletes unnecessary files, and the Maintenance Wizard, which holds your hand through the scheduling of basic disk maintenance, are great for novices. And power users will love the Task Scheduler and System Configuration utility.
Please note that just doing an upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 will give you a real good feel for some of what Windows 98 has to offer.
