Creating Web Pages (continued)

Will I then be able to find my page from that search engine?

Probably not right away. Most search engines require between 1 day to a few weeks for your site to be available. They normally check the site over to make sure it is working before listing.

How does the search engine get the site description that they display?

Different search engines will display different information. Yahoo requires you to type in this information when you list the "URL". WebCrawler retrieves this information from the text of your page, while others like Infoseek use "META Tags" which are in your page but do not display on the browser.

Note: Most search engines do things a bit different to arrive at the same or similar result.

Do all search engines allow you to list for free?

No! Some do not allow you to list without a fee.

A few search engines do not have their own listings at all.

ex. Dogpile.com is a search engine that queries several other search engines and then reports which search engines found which sites.

Snap.com appears to work in a similar way but doesn't report where it found the sites.

I listed my site but when I search I can't find it!

You should be sure that you use a highly descriptive title. Here is an example from our Club Page.
<HEAD>
<TITLE>WPCUG Welcome to the Windsor PC Users Group</TITLE>
Also include a META tag description, and create META tag keywords that contain comma-separated phrases. Use an assortment of synonyms that accurately describe your site, but don't try to boost the site's relevance by repeating keywords. The overuse and repetition of keywords may result in a lower relevancy score and possible omission from the listings.

Here are the keywords on our Club Site.
<META name="Keywords" CONTENT="wpcug, w.p.c.u.g., windsor p c users group, windsor p. c. users group, windsor personal computer users group, windsor computer club, windsor, windsor ont, computer help, windsor club, p. c. club, p c club, ibm clone, ibm p. c., " >
</HEAD>

Using these tags should make your site easier to find.
Note: Some search engines make use of meta tags while others just ignore them.
Well that’s it for this installment of Creating Web Pages. Let me know what you’d like to see in future editions.
